artist studio + gallery + residence
illinois institute of technologyfall 2012 advanced studio
a visual and spatial exercise that combines modernist architectural training, modern art, and material sensibility.
situated on a generic lot in Chicago, the project explores a spatial problem focusing on modulation of space, amplification of light, resolution of scale and proportion, purpose of structure, and authenticity of material. The composition evolves from three volumes of residence, studio, and gallery. Interior and exteriors spaces are unified by a bold gesture, a spine, as well as divided and highlighted by a subtle shifting of planes.
Based on a formulaic grid developed by Mies Van der Rohe as an underlaying framework, the shifting of volumes and planes emphasizes scale, space and directionality. From the site plan to interior organization, the composition gravitates around a main spine, a kind of architectonic scaffolding which allows for the visual connection and spatial separation of the rectangular volumes. The spinal axis negotiates the overlapping and directionality of the volumes as well as mediate the spatial flow. The use of a variety of stone, wood and metal presents an amalgam of the natural and the manufactured, and creates a harmony between the art and the spaces they inhabit.
